Mandatory Evacuation Order for El Capitan Canyon, El Capitan Ranch, El Capitan State Beach and Refugio State Beach

Due to the expansion of the "Sherpa Fire", a vegetation fire that broke out this afternoon just before 3:30 p.m. at the top of Refugio Road, a Mandatory Evacuation Order has been issued for the following areas:

El Capitan Canyon, El Capitan Ranch, El Capitan State Beach and Refugio State Beach.  Individuals in this area should leave immediately. A reverse 911 was sent to approximately 160 phone lines. 

A Mandatory Evacuation Order remains in effect for Refugio Canyon, Venadito Canyon and Las Flores Canyon.  A reverse 911 was sent to approximately 235 phone lines.

Highway 101 is closed northbound at Winchester Canyon Road and southbound at Buellton.  

The American Red Cross has two shelters open.  One shelter is located at the Wake Center located at 300 N. Turnpike Road.  Another shelter is located at Santa Ynez Valley Union High School located at 2975 E. Highway 246 in Santa Ynez,

For those with small animals who must evacuate, coordinate with the American Red Cross at the shelter.  For large animal evacuations, contact Animal Services care of Susan Klein-Rothschild at 805-896-1057.

The Sheriff's Office will send out updated alerts on evacuation orders and warnings.
