Odd/Even outside watering restrictions remain in place for those people on Rifle water.

June 10, 2016

Thursday, June 9, the City of Rifle realized its first full day of stable water production since the June 1 raw water line transmission break. The temporary pumping system is able to meet the current odd/even watering demand and crews were able to begin removing and evaluating the three (3) failed pumps at the City’s raw water intake.

The initial evaluation indicates issues with all three pumps. Pumps and pumps motors are being removed and sent to be re-evaluated and rebuilt if necessary. Other pump station repairs will be made onsite by City staff as parts arrive. It will take several weeks to completely restore full operations at the pump station. The City will continue using temporary pumps to deliver raw water to the water plant until such time the City pumps can be put back in service.

While the City repairs the raw water supply pumps, commercial car washes can remain open and odd-even outdoor water use will remain in effect. This means that if the last number of your address ends in 0,2,4,6,8 you can water on days that end in 0,2,4,6,8, and if your address ends in 1,3,5,7,9, you can water on days that end in 1,3,5,7,9.

At this time, the city’s ability to deliver water to the water plant is stable, but not optimal. Citizens and businesses are requested to conserve water and use water sparingly, as use of water for outside applications accounts for up to 60-percent of the volume of water used from the city water system on a daily basis. If demand exceeds the ability to deliver water, full outdoor restrictions will be implemented.

“City staff now has a better understanding of the situation and after a week of unpredictability is grateful to have a path towards recovery,” said Rifle City Manager Matt Sturgeon. “Staff continues to be grateful to the residents for all of the support they have received.”

Information updates on restrictions will be delivered to residents via the City of Rifle website at Residents can also sign up for notifications from the Central Communications Emergency notification system at, the city’s local “NIXLE” notification system at, and the Rifle Police Department Facebook page.
