*Update-Suspect Shot and Killed after Pointing Gun at State Police Officers Serving a Search Warrant-Update*

Indianapolis- The Marion County Coroner’s Office has made positive identification of the male suspect involved in a police action shooting with an Indiana State Trooper on May 27th, 2016. He was identified as Terry Edwards, 59, of Indianapolis.

The Indiana State Police officer involved in the shooting was Senior Trooper Josh Watson, a 12 year veteran.

No further information is available to release at this time.

Below is the original news release issued May 27th, 2016.

Indianapolis – Just after 11:30 this morning, May 27, 2016, a white male, who appears to be in his late 50's, was shot and killed after pointing a long gun at state police officers that were serving a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of West Gimber Street on the near southwest side of Indianapolis.

Indiana State Police personnel were assisting detectives with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department as that agency was continuing an investigation of a suspect alleged to have fired multiple gunshots into a Brown County residence on May 7th of this year.  Brown County Sheriff detectives had obtained a search warrant for the Gimber Street Address to search for any handgun, shotgun, shotgun shells and a cell phone.

When officers knocked and announced their presence and purpose to serve a search warrant there was no answer.  Officers then forcibly opened the front door.  Before entering to begin their search of the residence the officers were confronted by a person armed with a long gun.  The suspect was told to put the gun down, but instead raised the gun toward a state police officer, who was also a member of the SWAT team.  That officer, in defense of his own life, shot the armed suspect.

After the shooting, officers ensured there were no other persons in the residence that could pose a threat and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene.  The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Once the suspect is formally identified, and his next of kin are notified, his name will be released.  The name of the state police officer will be released within the next 72 hours.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and the suspect’s remains will be placed in the custody of the Marion County Coroner.  As is customary in police shootings, the involved officer will be assigned administrative duties for the immediate future.

The loss of any life is tragic.  Events like this can be avoided when suspects who have been involved in criminal acts comply with the lawful orders of police officers.

This is an on-going investigation and no further information is available.
