Harris County Sheriff's Office And CITGO Award Local Students For Attendance.

HOUSTON, May 24, 2016 – The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) and CITGO Petroleum Corporation are proud to announce the third annual “Kindling Young Minds” program aimed at boosting attendance at four Houston area high schools.

Between May 20 and May 26, representatives from CITGO and the Sheriff’s office will visit schools in the Alief, Houston and Spring Branch Independent School Districts (ISD) to honor students who have demonstrated improved attendance and through the spring semester.

The students will receive Kindle Fire tablets as recognition of their achievement.

Sheriff Ron Hickman commented, “Attendance plays a huge role in a student success; that is why we have been proud of our partnership with CITGO for the last three years in awarding Kindle Fires to students, who have demonstrated improved and perfect attendance".

Sheriff Hickman emphasizes the importance of reading comprehension and access to technology as important tools to create opportunities for young people in the Harris County Community.


CITGO Petroleum Corporation has donated 16 Kindle Fires, with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office matching for a total of 32 kindles to be awarded to students.

The presentations begin at 9:00 am.
