The Newark Police Department is releasing information about recent crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

May 18th.

1346 Hours: Officers responded to Starbucks on Thornton Avenue and arrested a 42 year old Newark male for petty theft and being a felon in possession of ammunition. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

1924 Hours: Officer Cervantes responded to NewPark Mall on a report of a female passed out in a vehicle. A 38 year old Fremont woman was contacted in the vehicle and cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

0435 Hours: Officer Geser responded to the T-Mobile store on Newark Boulevard to investigate a broken window. No entry was made.

0454 Hours: Officer Norvell investigated a window smash burglary attempt at Round Table Pizza on Thornton Avenue. The suspects were last seen fleeing the area in a dark colored compact vehicle, possibly a black Nissan Maxima.

May 19th.

1354 Hours: Officer Arroyo responded to the Greenback Pawn Shop on Thornton Avenue for a possible vandalism report. The victim placed a 42 year old male Transient under citizen’s arrest for trespassing. Officer Arroyo accepted the arrest and an additional charge for possessing drug paraphernalia was added to the case. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

1408 Hours: Officer Johnson contacted and arrested a 22 year old Newark male for possessing a switchblade knife. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

1536 Hours: Alameda County Fire requested police units respond to the area of 7015 Gateway Boulevard to assist with traffic control for a natural gas leak. Officers, Public Works, and RAVEN volunteers coordinated road closures and evacuations. The gas leak was contained and the roads were reopened and employees were allowed to return to the business park.

May 20th

0623 Hours: Officer Slavazza contacted and arrested a 53 year old Newark male for driving with a suspended license. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail.

1552 Hours: Officer Mapes contacted and arrested a 32 year old Newark male for an outstanding arrest warrant. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail.

0841 Hours: Officer Fredstrom investigated a theft of tools from a work truck at Chase Suite Hotel. The loss is approximately $2000 in tools. There are no known suspects

1012 Hours: Officer Slavazza investigated a hit and run injury collision that occurred in the intersection of St. Edward Street and Thornton Avenue. A pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk by a vehicle turning right onto eastbound Thornton Avenue. The suspect vehicle was described as a newer black Jeep Cherokee, or similar, driven by a female with a head scarf. The pedestrian suffered a hand injury, but declined medical assistance at the scene.

1619 Hours: Officer Jackman responded to JC Penny’s for a shoplifter in custody. Officer Jackman accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 42 year old Newark woman for petty theft. The suspect was issued a citation and released.

1825 Hours: CSO Parks investigated a stolen burgundy colored, four door Nissan Sentra, License #4DOL777 from Newark Junior High School.

2254 Hours: Officer Jackman investigated a vehicle stuck on the railroad tracks at Mayhews Landing Road. The driver, a 25 year old male from Hayward, was cited for driving under the influence and the vehicle was towed.

0005 Hours: Officers recovered a stolen vehicle at the 7-11 located at 7288 Thornton Avenue. The 18 year old male driver from Fremont was arrested and booked at the Fremont Jail for receiving stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.

0203 Hours: Officers Simon and Rodgers contacted and cited a 51 year old male from Emeryville for public urination behind Afghan Village (5698 Thornton Avenue).

0208 Hours: Officer Johnson responded to a disturbance at the Double Tree Hotel (39900 Balentine Drive). A 28 year old transient suspect was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

May 21st.

0921 Hours: Officer Hogan performed a probation search on a 32 year old Newark male and located a glass pipe. The suspect was issued a citation for possessing drug paraphernalia and released.

1156 Hours: Officer Mapes recovered a stolen 1995 Honda Civic parked on Christine Street at Bellhaven Avenue. The vehicle was towed and the registered owner was notified.

1225 Hours: While performing a traffic enforcement stop on a 20 year old Newark male, Officer Musantry smelled a the order of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Marijuana was recovered from the vehicle and the driver was issued a citation and released.

1528 Hours: Officer Mapes responded to the area of Bellhaven Avenue and recovered an unoccupied 1997 Nissan Sentra that had been reported stolen out of Hayward. The registered owner responded to the scene and took possession of the vehicle.

1649 Hours: Officer Musantry and Officer Hogan contacted and arrested a 26 year old Newark woman on her outstanding warrant. The suspect was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

2010 Hours: Officer Rodgers conducted a traffic stop on a red 1999 GMC SUV on California Street at Central Avenue. A 32 year old Newark male was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools and three outstanding misdemeanor warrants. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

0154 Hours: Officer Johnson conducted a traffic stop at the Chevron gas station on Thornton Avenue. The 31 year old male driver from Fremont was arrested for driving under the influence and booked at the Fremont Jail

0209 Hours: Officer Rodgers conducted a traffic stop and arrested the 42 year old male driver from Newark for his outstanding warrants. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail.

May 22nd.

1514 Hours: Officers responded to a residence in the 36600 block of Beutke Dr. regarding a family fight. The 46 year old victim was involved in a physical altercation with his 65 year old father. During the fight, the father grabbed a small knife and tried to cut his son. The very dull knife resulted in the son having minor cuts to his arms. The 65 year old father was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail, for 245 PC- assault with a weapon.

2000 Hours: Officer Warren recovered a stolen Honda Pilot (from Union City) on Christine Street. The registered owner was notified and the vehicle was towed.
