“Police Blotter” Highlights – Ending May 15th, 2016

ROBBERIES
On Wednesday, May 11th, around 3:30 p.m., Ofc. Paul was dispatched to Union Landing on the report of a robbery. Four unknown suspects approached two victims near their vehicle. One suspect punched the male victim in the face, while another suspect took the female victim’s purse. They then fled on foot. One of the stolen credit cards was later used at Southland Mall by the pictured suspect.

On Friday, May 13th, around 11:45 p.m., Ofc. Jensen was dispatched to the Alvarado-Niles 7-11 on the report of a robbery. A suspect entered the store, took an item to the counter, and stole cash when the cashier opened the cash drawer. The cashier said the suspect had a black semi-automatic handgun concealed in his waistband. He was described as a black male, 20-35 years old, 5’8” to 6’0” tall and 220-240 lbs. He had short hair and a black goatee.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Shooting:
On Saturday, May 14th, around 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Sumac St. and Tamarack Dr. on the report of a promiscuous shooting. Through witness statements and evidence, officers determined the driver of a white sedan (see photo) pointed a firearm out the window and fired 5-6 rounds in the direction of Teddy Dr. A red vehicle also may have been involved.

Vandalism:
Sometime between the late evening on Saturday, May 14th, and the early morning hours of Sunday, May 15th, eight vehicles on Colgate Dr., Pelican Dr., Balmoral St., and Hartnell St. had their front windshields and/or rear windows shattered. Nothing was taken from the vehicles, and the incidents do not appear to be burglary attempts.

BURGLARIES AND CAR THEFTS

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, May 9th through Sunday, May 15th, there were four reported residential burglaries:
• 4300 block of Planet Circle: Occurred between Monday, May 9th at 9 p.m., and Tuesday, May 10th at 7 a.m. A bicycle was stolen from an open garage.
• 3100 block of San Andreas Dr.: Occurred on Wednesday, May 11th, around 12:15 p.m. A rear door and sliding glass door were both pried open. The residence was ransacked, and the loss included electronics. A neighbor observed two male suspects jump over the fence with trash bags and flee the scene in a black four-door vehicle. The first suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, 5’8” with a thin build. The second suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, 5’10” with a thin build.
• 34200 block of Tartarian Way: Occurred between Sunday, May 8th at 6 p.m., and Wednesday, May 11th at 6 p.m. Unknown method of entry, possibly with a lost house key. The loss included jewelry.
• 31300 block of Santa Fe Way: Occurred on Friday, May 13th, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. A side door into the garage was left open for the dog to go in and out. Cabinets in the garage were opened, but there was no loss.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, May 9th through Sunday, May 15th, there were two reported commercial burglaries:
• 32100 block of Dyer St.: Occurred on Monday, May 9th, around 3:15 a.m. A side glass door was smashed, and the loss included a safe and cash.
• 32900 block of Alvarado-Niles Rd.: Occurred on Tuesday, May 10th, between 1:40 a.m. and 1:45 a.m. A glass door was smashed, and the loss included a cash box and an iPod.

AUTO BURGLARIES AND VEHICLE THEFTS
From Monday, May 9th through Sunday, May 15th, there were five reported auto burglaries, three of which occurred in the Union Landing shopping center. All five of the burglaries targeted purses, backpacks and electronics that were left in plain view on the seats or floorboards.

From Monday, May 9th through Sunday, May 15th, there were 10 reported vehicle thefts. As of the time of this report, five of the vehicles have been recovered.

Congratulations to Sergeant Brandon Hayward who was selected by fellow officers as the Optimist Club Officer of the Year for Union City Police Department. Brandon is now a four-time winner of this award!

UCPD’s Ofc. Leete, Det. Dejong, and Ofc. Willson went to Washington, D.C. last week to attend ceremonies for National Police Week and Police Memorial Day. On May 15th, members of the Union City PD Honor Guard joined with their Hayward PD Honor Guard colleagues at the National Peace Officer Memorial.
