Sausalito Police Arrest Parolee for Prowling

On Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at approximately 11:45 AM, Sausalito Police Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Crescent Ave on the report of a person acting suspiciously.

The reporting party described the suspicious person as a black male, in his 30’s wearing sagging blue jeans, who appeared to be homeless. The person was walking slowly, going onto private property, looking into residences’ windows, and knocking on doors.

Sergeant Steve Veveiros arrived on scene and contacted Derrick OLIVER (28 year old resident of Oakland) walking in the area. A records check on OLIVER revealed that he is currently on parole from the California Department of Corrections for burglary. OLIVER has recently been convicted on two additional residential burglaries that he committed in Napa County in 2015. OLIVER is currently awaiting sentencing for the 2015 burglaries.

While searching the area, officers located a female attempting to hide in the back seat of a parked rental car. The female turned out to be OLIVER’s girlfriend who claimed to have just used the rental car to drive OLIVER from Vallejo to Sausalito. There was insufficient evidence to arrest the female for any crime.

Officers also located a stolen 1995 Acura Integra parked nearby where OLIVER had been contacted. The vehicle had been stolen out of Sausalito on May 12th. Officers are investigating further to determine if OLIVER had any involvement in the theft of the vehicle.

Officer Justin Ritz arrested OLIVER for prowling and violating the conditions of his parole. OLIVER was subsequently transported and booked into the Marin County Jail.
