Health advisory issued for Palm Springs area due to two traps with mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile

Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District reported via a press release on May 13,2016, they have had two traps with mosquito samples text positive for West Nile Virus in Palm Springs. The two positive samples were located near the intersection of Yucca Place and Marion Way and the other near Mesquite Avenue and Vella Road.

Coachella Valley Mosquito Vector Control District staff will post disease notifications near the trap locations will intensify mosquito surveillance with an increase in traps. Technicians will also carry out larval and adult control as necessary in the surrounding area in an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes and interrupt further transmissions of West Nile Virus.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites"

Apply Insect Repellent. Use a repellent with Deet, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should  not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under three years of age.

Be Aware of Peak WNV-Transmitting Mosquito Hours.  Dawn and dusk are peak biting times for mosquitoes that can transmit West Nile Virus. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities during that time. Also, be aware of day-time biting mosquitoes and report them to the District.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitoes away from skin.

Mosquito Proof Your Home:

Drain Standing Water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places for mosquitoes to breed by draining/discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flower pots, and wading pools. Change water and scrub clean birdbaths and pet bowls at least weekly.

Install or Repair Screens. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all your windows and doors.
