#LASD 39th Annual Memorial Torch Run Kicks-Off Friday, May 13, 9 AM, at Hall of Justice Bldg, Los Angeles @LASDHQ

Sheriff’s Department 39th Annual

Memorial Torch Relay Run

Who:     Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel, family, friends and law enforcement supporters

What:    The Memorial Torch Relay Run was established in 1976 to honor the memory of the brave and dedicated peace officers in Los Angeles County who sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties.

The run, which consists of 58 legs of varying distance, will begin its non-stop journey from the Hall of Justice building in the city of Los Angeles and travel over 300 miles.  The Memorial Torch Relay Run will pass each of the mainland Sheriff’s stations over the course of three days.  Nearly 2,000 runners will participate in the relay.  The 24/7 Memorial Torch Relay Run is set to end on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Altadena Sheriff’s Station.

According to the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation, this year’s Memorial Torch Relay Run will honor five of these fallen heroes.  One of these officers gave his life in the line of duty, in Los Angeles County, since 2015: Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez, Downey Police Department, EOW 11/18/2015

In addition, historical research has determined that five of these officers are from the distant past:  Officer William A. Guidera, Monterey Park Police Department; Officer Ralph Miover and Lieutenant Arthur W. Bethel, Los Angeles Police Department; Deputy Otto R. Ellinger and Sergeant Thomas J. Fonte, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died in the line of duty between 1925 and 1990.  These names will be added to the Memorial Wall.

When:     Friday, May 13, 2015, at 9:00 a.m.

Where:    Hall of Justice Building

                 211 West Temple Street
