Alleged Impaired Driver Loses Control and Strikes a House
Vigo County—On Wednesday, May 11, at 6:18p.m., Indiana State Police and Vigo County emergency agencies responded to a motor-vehicle crash at 11491 North US 150 near Libertyville.
Preliminary investigation revealed a green 1963 Chevrolet Nova, driven by 31-year-old Mark A. Downing of West Terre Haute, IN was traveling northbound on US 150, when Downing lost control, left the roadway on the right side, and struck a house.
Mark Downing sustained severe facial injuries, was initial taken to Union Hospital Terre Haute and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. His mother, Babbie L. Downing (age unavailable and correct spelling) sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Union Hospital Terre Haute and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mark Downing’s three-year-old daughter (name unavailable) was secured in the rear seat in only a lap belt and not in an approved child restraint seat. She was transported to Terre Haute Union Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released to family members.
The crash was investigated by Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Mary Parmer.
ISP Trooper Brad Fyfe cited Downing for Open Container Violation and Child Restraint Violation. Additional alcohol related offenses are pending, as Downing tested .22% BAC.
Also assisting were ISP Trooper Nicole Cheeks, New Goshen Fire Rescue, and Riley Fire/EMS.
