FREE Storm Spotter Training coming to Jackson 5/18. Also, updates on Nixle alerting policy. See email/link.

Severe spring weather is upon us!  Whether it is flash floods, thunderstorms, microbursts, or hail, the time of year when everyone gets outdoors is also a time when we have to start thinking about weather safety.  For this reason, we are hosting the National Weather Service's Weather Spotter training here in Jackson!  Come on out and learn about weather safety from a NWS meteorologist.

WHAT: National Weather Service Weather Spotter Training

WHERE: Teton County EOC  3240 S Adams Canyon Dr

WHEN: Wednesday May 18th, 2016  6pm to 8pm

COST: Free to the public

Several other items to notify Nixle subscribers of, especially in light of our recent Flash Flood Warning on May 8th:

  • Some folks may have received in addition to the Nixle message, something called a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on their cell phone during the Flash Flood Warning on May 8th.  These WEAs are generated through FEMA's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System automatically for Flash Flood Warnings, Tornado Warnings, Tsunami Warnings, and AMBER Alerts if you are in an area where the warning is issued.  You do not need to subscribe to these alerts, and newer phones will receive them automatically no matter where you are in the country.  Not all cell providers support the service, and you should check with yours to see if they do and if your phone is capable of receiving WEA.  You can learn more about WEA here: https://www.fema.gov/frequently-asked-questions-wireless-emergency-alerts.  Emergency Management can also issue these alerts for extremely dangerous situations.
  • A great resource for preparedness information and weather alerts is the FEMA app for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry.  You can learn more about it here https://www.fema.gov/mobile-app.
  • You can also sign up to get automated weather alerts for Teton County from the National Weather Service forwarded by Nixle by texting TETONWX to 888777.  This service will forward Watches and Advisories via text message between 7am and 10pm and Warnings no matter what time they are issued.
  • We will now be automatically forwarding all Warnings issued by the National Weather Service to all Nixle subscribers.  This ensures that critical messages get out to the public automatically.  We will monitor this to see if it results in too many extra messages and will modify the policy accordingly.
