On Sunday, May 1, 2016, at approximately 8:45 A.M., Turlock Police responded to the 1500 block of Stallion Court on a report of a male subject causing a disturbance while holding two kitchen knives. While Officers were responding to this location, they were informed by family members the subject, a 25 year old male had made a statement to them that he was going to “charge at the arriving officers and make them shoot him.”

Once officers arrived on scene, they found two family members attempting to restrain the subject. Officers attempted to verbally defuse the situation but the subject was non-responsive. Less lethal rounds commonly known as a bean bag rounds were deployed to disarm the subject. The subject was safety detained and transported to the hospital by ambulance for a mental health evaluation.

This incident was brought to a safe conclusion as a result of the quick thinking by everyone involved in this situation. Turlock Police officers receive ongoing training as well as attend a 40 hr Crisis Intervention Training that equip them with information on recognizing signs of mental health distress and how to effectively deal with them.
