The first class of the independent Newport News Police Training Academy will be sworn in during graduation ceremonies this evening. The event will take place at 7:00 P.M. at the Ferguson Center for the Arts on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

Tonight’s ceremony will mark the completion of twenty-two weeks of intense classroom and practical training. The new officers will now be partnered with an experienced field training officer for approximately three months to receive additional training as they put their academy training to practical use in the patrol setting. The twenty-two new officers will be sworn in by the Honorable James H. Harvell, III (Ret.) General District Court Judge. Tonight’s keynote speaker is Dr. Alvin J. Schexnider, President of Thomas Nelson Community College. There will also be remarks by Mayor Joe S. Frank and Police Chief James D. Fox.

The ceremony will also include the Newport News Police Color Guard and Honor Guard Drill Team and the Newport News Police Pipes and Drums.

Prior to this class, the Newport News Police Academy was a satellite of the Hampton Roads Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy. Just prior to this class the Department was notified that its application to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to become an independent academy had been approved.
