DATE/TIME: April 27, 2016/ 3:30 a.m.

INCIDENT: Stolen Vehicle Leads To Vehicle Pursuit

LOCATION: Bayon Street and Milliken Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga

SUSPECT(S): Salvador Mendez 19-year-old male from San Bernardino

SUMMARY: On April 27, 2016, at approximately 3:30 a.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department received information about the whereabouts of a stolen vehicle through the Rancho Cucamonga fixed Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras. Deputies saturated the area and located the vehicle near Banyan Street and Milliken Avenue.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Deputies pursued the vehicle for over thirty miles, and at times reached speeds of over 100 MPH. Due to the elevated speeds, deputies felt the suspect’s vehicle endangered the public and ended the pursuit by a well-executed PIT maneuver. The driver, Salvador Mendez, immediately exited the vehicle and ran from deputies. After a short foot pursuit, Mendez was taken into custody. Mendez was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading. Mendez’s bail was set at $50,000.

The use of ALPR cameras has dramatically increased Rancho Cucamonga Police Department’s ability to locate stolen vehicles and to obtain information on suspects’ vehicle whereabouts. This information can be shared with other agencies to assist with investigations and quickly apprehend suspects. The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is devoted to the advancement in our technological capabilities to enhance our ability to protect the citizens of Rancho Cucamonga.
