Tuesday PM: Suspect in Sunday shooting on N. Highland arrested on two felony charges.

***UPDATE 4-27-16, 9:00 AM*** On 4-26-16, the detective assigned to this case filed charges on the suspect through the 47th District Attorney’s Office. The DA’s Office accepted two charges against Derrick Tremain Coatney BM 19. The charges were aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct, cause numbers 72052-Z and 72053-Z. The deadly conduct charge is connected to the shot which hit the house at 1410 N. Highland. By that afternoon, officers developed information that Coatney was in a home at 3623 Neuches. They had reason to believe that he was armed. At about 4:45 PM, APD SWAT officers watching he residence saw Coatney walk outside and took him into custody without incident. He was not armed at that time. Officers secured consent to search the home and seized an AR-15 type rifle from inside. Coatney was booked into the Potter County Detention Center on the outstanding warrants. When investigators last spoke to the victim at the hospital, they confirmed that his injury was not life threatening.

ORIGINAL DETAILS: On 4-24-16, at 11:37 AM, officers were sent to the 1400 block of N. Highland on a disorderly conduct call. Responding officers found that the call was actually a drive-by shooting. The victim, a HM 20 that lives in that block, told officers that he was walking across the street when the shooting happened. A green Dodge Challenger approached from the north. The driver, a black male, slowed and fired shots from a handgun at the victim. One shot hit the victim in the upper arm, penetrated it, and struck him in the side of the upper body. One shot hit a home at 1410 N. Highland. The suspect drove away. The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance. His injury is not believed to be life-threatening. Officers recovered two spent 9mm caliber cartridge casings from the street at the scene. Officers believe this shooting was linked to a previous dispute involving the suspect and victim. There have been no arrests.
