During the week of April 18, 2016, through April 24, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 341 DUI arrests compared with 299 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.


There have been 457 major accidents so far this year compared with 477 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been eight fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in nine fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in seven fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 60 percent for fatal crashes and 28.6 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
