4/24/16, press release: motor vehicle vs bicyclist crash

On April 24, 2016 at 1611 hours, the Burlington Police Department and the Burlington Fire Department responded to Shelburne Avenue in Burlington VT for a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist. Police and Fire arriving on scene found 58 year old cyclist Sam Norris of Burlington, lying unresponsive on the green belt near the southbound lanes of Shelburne Ave across from Adams Court. A physician with the UVM Medical Center who did not witness the accident but was nearby when the crash occurred was assisting Norris at this time. The operator of the vehicle involved, Jacob Barewicz of Burlington, was also at the scene.

Preliminary investigation by the Burlington Police Department show that Norris was legally present and riding southbound in the right lane of Shelburne Ave just south of Gove Court. Barewicz operating a blue Jeep Liberty was also southbound in the right lane behind Norris. Barewicz’s vehicle collided with the rear of Norris’s bicycle. The collision propelled Norris and his bicycle into a tree located along the green belt. Norris sustained injuries to his head, neck and body from the collision the extent of which is unknown at this time. Norris was transported to the UVM Medical Center Emergency Department by UVM Rescue where he is expected to recover. At this time speed, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. A Crash reconstructionists has been assigned to the incident and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information on the crash are asked to contact Ofc. N. Moyer at the Burlington Police Department 540-2326.
