4/24/16 press release: Domestic Assault/Barricaded Subject

On April 24, 2016 at approximately 9:55am Burlington Police Officers responded to the Champlain Inn at 165 Shelburne Road for a report of a disturbance in progress. When Officers arrived on scene they could hear a female yelling for someone to get off of her and yelling for help.

Officers determined that the female had been assaulted by her boyfriend, 24 year old Matthew Cooke of Burlington, and he had barricaded himself, alone, in their room with several large knives while allegedly under the influence of a combination of drugs. Burlington Police set up a perimeter and used negotiators to talk Cooke out of the room where he was taken into custody.

Cooke was lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility on charges of domestic assault, unlawful restraint, and disorderly conduct for lack of $5,000 bail.
