INCIDENT: Homicide Investigation

LOCATION: 25900 block of Baseline Avenue, Highland

VICTIM #1: Kirk Savala (Deceased), age 52, a resident of Highland
VICTIM #2: Donna Savala, age 50, a resident of Highland

SUSPECT: Jovan Meeks, 21, San Bernardino

UPDATE: April 22, 2016 7:30 p.m.
During the past week, Homicide Investigators have completed numerous interviews and processed the evidence related to this case. On Friday, April 22, 2016 Investigators identified Jovan Meeks, a 21 year old San Bernardino resident, as the shooter in this murder. They have obtained an arrest warrant for Meeks with a bail amount of $2,000,000.

SUMMARY:
On Saturday, April 16, 2016, at approximately 10:34 a.m., deputies from the Highland Sheriff’s Station responded to an apartment complex in the 25900 block of Baseline Avenue, following the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies located Kirk and Donna Savala, each suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, Kirk was pronounced deceased at 11:57 a.m. Donna sustained serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail were summoned and are conducting the investigation. At this early stage of the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest the Savalas were the intended targets. It appears they were in close proximity to a dispute between others and were inadvertently stuck by fired bullets. Those involved in the dispute, fled the area and are being sought at this time.
