#LASD Recognized As One of the Three at White House Police Data Initiative Program
From his first days as the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, Sheriff Jim McDonnell sought to set a clear tone underscoring the importance that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) be transparent and accountable to all the residents we protect and are sworn to serve. He made it clear that all members of the LASD must hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity and constitutional policing.
Since 2014 and 2015, respectively, LASD has been involved in innovative initiatives, such as the President Obama Task Force on 21st Century Policing. LASD has been an active member in the White House Technology and Data Innovation for Transparency and Accountability in Policing under the Police Data Initiative (PDI). Both programs are aimed at identifying ways to improve community relationships through collaborative efforts and expand or enhance the use of data to increase transparency, build community trust, and strengthen accountability.
This week President Obama’s administration announced that 53 jurisdictions, covering more than 41 million people, have now committed to the Police Data Initiative, with over 90 data sets released to date. These commitments represent concrete steps toward building trust and speak to a larger shift in the culture of policing that is at the core of the Task Force’s recommendations.
On Friday, April 22, 2016, the White House hosted an event titled, “The Police Data Initiative Year of Progress: Building on the President’s Call to Action to Leverage Open Data to Increase Trust between Police and Citizens.” At the event, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was recognized as one of the three model programs for their extraordinary work. Wendy Harn, the LASD Chief Data Officer (CDO) was invited to speak about LASD’s open data program. The open data for policing program is an innovative program that gives the public and stakeholders’ access to daily, monthly and yearly crime information and deputy involved shooting events. The comprehensive data sets, including user-defined charts, maps and spreadsheets, can be found by visiting www.LASD.org and clicking on the Public Data Sharing link at the top of the page.
