Unlocked Vehicles Being Targeted in Crimes

Since January 1, 2016, the Sausalito Police Department has received over 40 calls for service regarding crimes such as auto burglaries, thefts from vehicles, and stolen vehicles. These incidents have occurred at various locations throughout the City of Sausalito with residential areas within the hills reporting a recent increase in activity. The thefts are occurring at night and during the early morning hours. The vast majority of the vehicles being targeted are unlocked. In many cases property had been left inside the vehicles and was visible from outside. The suspects are ransacking the vehicles and stealing items of value that can be removed quickly.

Several other communities within the Bay Area as well as the State have seen an increase in crimes against vehicles over the last two years.

These types of crimes are often crimes of opportunity and can be drastically reduced by community members practicing simple crime prevention methods such as:

• Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
• Close/lock your vehicle’s doors.
• Roll up your vehicle’s windows.

The Sausalito Police Department is asking for the community’s help in solving or preventing similar crimes. Please report any crimes regarding your vehicle to the police department as well as suspicious incidents, persons, or vehicles that you see in your neighborhoods.

If anyone in the community notices anything that looks suspicious, they are encouraged to call the police department at 289-4170, or dial 911 for emergencies and crimes in progress.
