What is Identity Theft?
Identity theft is someone taking personal information like name, SS# or any financial account number and using it for an unlawful purpose. Identity Theft does not discriminate. Everyday people, business owners, celebrities and kids are prey to it. Identify theft is expensive. It can result in the personal loss of thousands of dollars.
Here are some tips to prevent Identity Theft…
• NEVER give out your Social Security number.
• Commit all passwords to memory.
• When using an ATM machine, make sure no one is hovering over you and can see you enter your password.
• Shred or deface any document with your name, address or any other personal information on it before recycling or disposal.
• Use a credit card when making online purchases. Try to pay the seller directly so that you can dispute the charges. Avoid paying by check or money order.
• Adopt an attitude of healthy skepticism. If it’s ‘too good to be true’ it probably isn’t.
• Tell your children never to give out their address, telephone number, password, school name or any other personal information.
