Woman arrested following a high speed pursuit through the streets of San Bernardino

DATE/TIME: April 19, 2016/11:41pm

INCIDENT: Felony Evading

LOCATION: Mill St./Lena Rd., San Bernardino

SUSPECT: Mary Mitchell, 45 years old, resident of Colton

SUSPECT VEHICLE: 2016 Chevrolet Quad Cab Truck

SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at about 11:41pm, Sheriff’s Central Deputies responded to the area of Lena Rd. and Mill St., at the request of the Sheriff’s Aviation, to assist California Highway Patrol Officers that were in pursuit of a 2016 Chevrolet truck. CHP Officers had initiated the pursuit of the vehicle after it failed to yield on the westbound I-10 Freeway. The vehicle exited the freeway and the suspect was attempting to elude officers while on city streets. Deputies responded to the area and were quickly able to locate the truck as it was being driven at a high rate of speed west of Waterman Ave. As the deputy positioned his vehicle behind the truck and activated his emergency lights and siren, the suspect immediately accelerated the truck while failing to stop for red traffic lights and cross traffic. As the deputy continued to follow the vehicle, it was apparent the suspect driver had no intentions of stopping and continued driving recklessly and with disregard for public safety. The suspect drove through the downtown area of San Bernardino City and entered the northbound onramp of the 215 at 5th St. Deputies and the CHP continued to pursue the vehicle as it led them up the 215 towards the High Desert. The vehicle exited at the Palm/Kendall off-ramp and made several evasive maneuvers on side streets before re-entering the 215 southbound at Palm. While on the freeway, the suspect vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. Deputies and CHP Officers maintained a safe distance as they continued to pursue the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then exited the freeway at University Ave. and continued westbound. At that point, deputies saw the opportunity to safely attempt a PIT maneuver. The technique was successful, causing the vehicle to spinout and slow. The driver again accelerated into the parking lot of a gas station on the corner of Hallmark/University and as she did so, she intentionally rammed the side of a Sheriff’s patrol vehicle. The impact with the patrol vehicle brought the pursuit to an end but the driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Deputies and CHP officers gave chase and she was quickly taken into custody without further incident. At that time, the driver was identified as Mary Mitchell. She was placed under arrest and booked at West Valley Detention Center for Felony Evading and Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Deputy.
