The Newark Police Department is releasing information about recent crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

April 14th.

0853 Hours: Officer Knutson investigated a vehicle theft on the 8400 block of Central Avenue. A yellow 2007 International 24 foot box truck, CA license # 02253T1 was stolen.

0943 Hours: Officer Heckman investigated a burglary at Isla Restaurant, 5720 Mowry School Road. Sometime after 2230 suspect/s smashed a window to gain entry. Loss is unknown at this time.

1815 Hours: Officer Ackerman responded to the front lobby for a self-surrender of an 18-year-old Newark male. He was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and booked at Fremont Jail.

0048 Hours: Officer Posadas led a team of Officers to serve an arrest warrant on the 5100 block of Tenaya Avenue. A 19 year old Newark male was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail. This arrest is related to the residential burglary that occurred on 4-12-16 on Juniper Street.

0522 Hours: Officers responded to Starbucks on 7324 Thornton Ave on a report of an armed robbery that just occurred. The suspect pointed a firearm at the workers and demanded cash. The suspect was last seen running westbound through the parking lot.

April 15th.

1618 Hours: Officer Heckman and Lieutenant Loth conducted a traffic stop and arrested a 19 year old Newark male for driving on a suspended license. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail.

0725 Hours: Detective Warren responded to a collision on Central Avenue and Birch Street. Detective Warren smelled marijuana coming from one of the vehicles. The driver of the vehicle, a 23 year old Newark male was driving on a suspended license. While searching the vehicle Detective Warren located a large amount of marijuana, a loaded stolen firearm and narcotics. The suspect was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail for possession of a loaded firearm, receiving stolen property, criminal possession of marijuana, transportation of marijuana for sale, driving on a suspended license and no proof of insurance. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

1913 Hours: Officer Mavrakis investigated a window smash auto burglary that occurred in the Macys parking lot between 1830-1900 hours. Possible suspect vehicle is a gray 2009 Nissan , with three male occupants. Loss was a laptop and tax documents.

1936 Hours: Officer Mavrakis investigated another auto burglary in the Macy’s upper parking lot. The same suspect vehicle as above was seen approaching the victim’s car. The victim was not contacted. Loss is unknown.

0114 Hours: While checking a vehicle in the Comfort Inn lot, Officer Johnson contacted a 25 year old Stockton male with two outstanding traffic warrants. The suspect was booked at the Fremont Jail for his warrants with additional charges for possession of a switch blade knife and false vehicle registration. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

0349 Hours: Officer Arroyo investigated a collision that occurred on Newark Boulevard at Cedar Boulevard where a tanker truck collided with a fire hydrant causing a gasoline spill. The Alameda County Fire Department Hazmat unit responded for the cleanup. A wide perimeter was set up for traffic control due to the nature of the spill. The roadway was reopened at 0830.

April 16th.

1220 Hours: Officer Mapes conducted a traffic stop on an unregistered vehicle. The 21 year old male driver from San Leandro was driving on an expired driver’s license. A 29 year old female passenger from San Leandro admitted she had a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine The pipe was located and she was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver was cited for driving without a license and his vehicle was towed. Both were released at the scene.

1220 Hours: During the above traffic stop, a 39 year old male from Santa Cruz was contacted and found to have an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from Fremont. He was arrested and released on a citation with a new court date.

1658 Hours: Officer Mapes responded to the Big Lot’s parking lot for a disturbance. A 35 year old male transient had been involved in a dispute with a customer. The suspect is on probation with a stay away order from all Big Lot’s in California. Officer Mapes arrested the suspect for violation of the court order. The suspect was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

2200 Hours: Officer Arroyo investigated a solo vehicle minor injury collision on Parkshore Drive at Rockport Court. The vehicle collided with a tree in a center divide. Medical aid was declined.

0425 Hours: Officer Johnson spotted a stolen white 1996 Honda Civic and attempted to pull it over on Jarvis Avenue near Haley St. The vehicle accelerated rapidly westbound on Jarvis. Officer Johnson did not pursue the vehicle due to the excessive speed involved. The vehicle was located 2 minutes later abandoned in front of the Meadows Apartments located on the 35700 block of Bettencourt Street. A search of the complex was conducted with negative results. Officer Johnson described the driver as a white male with brown hair wearing a white T-shirt and a female passenger with a black hoodie. The vehicle was released to the registered owner.

April 17th.

1125 Hours: Officer Losier investigated a burglary of a locker at the Silliman Center. An iPhone was reported missing.

1242 Hours: Officer Mapes investigated the theft of a dark green Honda Civic Ca/License 6UPM781. This same vehicle was stolen on 4-15-16 and recovered in Hayward on 4-16-16.

1645 Hours: Officer Jackman contacted a known 61 year old Newark male. During a probation search methamphetamine was found on his person. The suspect was arrested and booked at the Fremont Jail.



2054 Hours: Officer Johnson responded to a report of an unresponsive man lying in the parking lot of the Check Center located at 5710 Thornton Avenue. A 54 year old transient male was located. He was extremely intoxicated, uncooperative and yelling verbal threats at the Officer. The suspect was arrested for public intoxication, threatening a Police Officer and two out of county warrants. He was medically cleared at Washington Township Hospital for a small laceration to his cheek and booked at Santa Rita Jail.

0027 Hours: Officer Rodgers recovered a stolen 1992 Honda Accord that was parked on Brandywine Street near Birkdale Drive.

0347 Hours: Officer Taylor investigated a robbery that occurred in front of the Viola Blythe Center on Ash Street. One of the two suspects placed an unknown object in the victim’s back and demanded his property. The victim, a 20 year old Newark male, lost his cellular phone and wallet. The suspects fled towards Ash St. Park. The phone was located in the park and returned to the victim. The only description the victim could provide is as follows:
1. Hispanic male wearing an oversized black hooded sweatshirt
2. Hispanic male wearing a crew neck shirt with a dark complexion 5’07”- 5’08” thin build bony cheeks.

0554 Hours: Officer Johnson was dispatched to Public Storage, 6601 Overlake Place for what sounded like two subjects arguing on the roof of the building. Upon arrival, Officer Johnson observed a 29 year old Newark male on the roof. The suspect was placed under arrest for his outstanding misdemeanor warrant and booked at Santa Rita Jail.
