Press Release - Officer Involved Shooting on 04/12/2016
On April 12, 2016, at approximately 6:35 AM, Torrance Police Officers responded to a call of an unknown trouble at the Southern California Edison storage yard located at 17680 Yukon Ave. in the City of Torrance. The onsite security guard had requested help due to an individual that had armed himself with a chain saw and was attempting to harm the workers at the site.
Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspect, later identified as Jose Felix Cortez driving erratically through the yard. Cortez entered a utility truck and began attempting to run over the workers and the responding officers. At that time, an officer involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was released from the hospital and transported to the Torrance Police Department for processing. No officers sustained any injuries during this incident. The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending.
This incident is being investigated under the command and direction of Captain Martin Vukotic of the Special Operations Bureau with the assistance of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who is reviewing this incident as is routine for all officer involved shootings.
