“Police Blotter” Highlights – Ending March 13th, 2016

ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE

On Monday, March 7th, around 9 a.m., officers responded to the 3500 block of Sanddollar Ct. to a report of a woman who had been stabbed numerous times. Officers arrived on scene and located the victim with life-threatening wounds. Officers performed first aid until the Fire Department and EMS arrived. After a lengthy investigation by UCPD detectives, Samie Mawlavizada, a 21-year-old male from Hayward, was arrested for various charges including attempted homicide. This incident was an isolated incident in which the victim was the intended target. The victim is expected to survive.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Grand Theft:
On Monday, March 7th, around 4 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Marketplace shopping center (corner of Alvarado-Niles and Decoto Rd.) on reports of a theft. Two suspects had left the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise. The total loss was more than $1,200. A 39-year-old male from Union City and a 52-year-old female from San Francisco were both arrested for grand theft.

On Saturday, March 12th, around 9 p.m., Ofc. Jensen was dispatched to the area of 10th St. and I St. on a report of a grand theft. A customer took more than $4,000 while an employee’s back was turned. After reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, Ofc. Jensen located the suspect’s vehicle and suspect a few blocks away. The suspect admitted he took the money and told Ofc. Jensen where he had hidden the cash. The 35-year-old Union City resident was arrested for grand theft, and the money was returned to the business.

Criminal Threats:
On Tuesday, March 8th, around 11:10 a.m., officers were dispatched to Fremont Bank on Alvarado Blvd. for a report of criminal threats. A bank employee reported that a suspect smelling of gasoline threatened to “blow up” the bank. The suspect was located nearby with an improvised Molotov cocktail. Anthony La, a 42-year-old Union City resident, was arrested for criminal threats and possession of combustible material for arson.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon:
On Wednesday, March 9th, around 10 a.m., officers responded to the Marketplace shopping center to meet with a subject who had been hit with a pipe. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the subject had gotten into a verbal argument with his roommates. At some point, the subject stabbed the two other roommates with a box cutter. The roommates struck the subject in the head with a pipe in self-defense. The case was submitted to the DA’s office for review of charges against all three subjects for various charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious injury.

Robbery:
On Thursday, March 10th, around 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the report of a just-occurred robbery. A suspect pulled the purse off a victim’s shoulder and fled in a waiting vehicle. He was described as a Hispanic male adult, 5’7” to 5’10” and 180 lbs., black hair and clean shaven. A second suspect was described as a thin Pacific Islander male in his early 20s, with dark, curly hair. The vehicle, reported stolen out of San Leandro, was a 1997 maroon Honda Accord, California license plate #6DGA599.

Possession of Weapon at School:
On Friday, March 11th, around 10:45 a.m., Ofc. Mangan was dispatched to Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School for a report of a student who had a knife in his backpack. The 13-year-old was arrested and released to a parent with a notice to appear in court.

Vehicle Theft Arrest:
On Sunday, March 13th, around 8:30 a.m., Cadet Hobson was patrolling the Union Landing shopping center when he located a vehicle reported stolen out of Oakland. The driver, Tamara Rosselli, a 45-year-old Union City resident, was arrested for vehicle theft.

BURGLARIES AND CAR THEFTS

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th, there were three reported residential burglaries and one attempt:
• 33000 block of Arizona Way: Occurred between Saturday, March 5th at 12 p.m., and Monday, March 7th at 9 a.m. A window was left open or unlocked. The loss is unknown at this time.
• 33000 block of Arizona Way: Occurred between Monday, March 7th at 10:30 a.m., and Tuesday, March 8th at 2 p.m. The same home was burglarized again. Entry was made via unknown means, and the loss included a TV.
• 2400 block of Early Rivers Pl.: Occurred on Friday, March 11th, between 3 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. A side window was smashed. The residence was ransacked, and the loss included electronics and non-operable antique pistols.
• 31300 block of Santa Fe Way (attempt only): Occurred on Thursday, March 10th, between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. The rear sliding glass door was smashed, but there was no apparent entry or loss.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th, there was one reported commercial burglary:
• 33100 block of Alvarado-Niles Rd.: Occurred between Wednesday, March 9th at 7 p.m., and Thursday, March 10th at 8 a.m. The front glass door was smashed. The business was ransacked, and the loss included cash from a file cabinet.

AUTO BURGLARIES AND VEHICLE THEFTS
From Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th, there were three reported auto burglaries. Two of them occurred at the Union Landing shopping center on Sunday, March 13th, around 1 p.m. A suspect vehicle was spotted and described as an older model, small burgundy Pontiac.

From Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th, there were four reported vehicle thefts. As of the time of this report, two of the vehicles have been recovered.

Please join us in welcoming our newest Union City Police Officers: Juan Moreno and Anthony Bellotti. They graduated this week from the Alameda County Sheriff's Academy's 154th class. Ofc. Bellotti also won the top award for being the fittest physical performer of all 38 recruits.
