On Sunday March 13th The Green Bay Police Department participated in St. Baldrick’s event to raise money for children with cancer. This year, family friends and officers of the Green Bay Police department have raised approximately $4000. Additionally, officers raised an additional $350 for shaving their facial hair. Officers have participated in this event for seven years and have raised approximately $61,530.

St Baldrick’s originally started for the department as a dare to the night shift officers. In 2008 it was brought to the shift by Lt. Ben Allen, and officers agreed that if $5,000 was raised as a total, everyone on the night shift would shave their heads. That year we met our goal, and every member of night shift shaved their heads in solidarity. "While this started as a challenge to all night shift officers to shave their heads, we quickly found out that it was so much more. We have an opportunity to bring attention to such an amazing organization in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and honor these little hero's who are battling against the evils of childhood cancer" said Lt. Ben Allen.

That was the starting point for this police department, and we have taken great pride in participating in this event almost every year.
“The experiences I have gone through in the 6 years I have done this have been life changing” said Officer Scott Salzmann. “I see it as a chance for us as a department to do some good and see a different side of the community. All too often we meet people under terrible circumstances, and rarely see the best of people. This is our chance to re-energize and see the positive side of the community. The thought of helping a little with childhood cancer research makes it all worth it. Cancer has become a “norm” and for us to be able to assist in fighting that is awesome” said Salzmann.

So many kids have to make the ultimate sacrifice, and for us, all we have to do is grow our hair, raise some money, and then go back to looking like normal. Most kids do not get to do that. I think it is important also to have kids see the police department with their shaved heads. If that gets one kid to come up and talk to us it is totally worth it, said Salzmann.
