Owen Valley Middle School to Host “Cyber Safety” Night with Indiana Crimes against Children Educators

Spencer – (Owen County) On Thursday night, March 24th at 6pm the Spencer-Owen Community Schools will be hosting a Cyber Safety Seminar presented by the Indiana State Police Internet Crimes against Children (ICAC) to the community. Parents, grandparents, teachers, students along with anyone in the community who is concerned about their children’s online activity is encouraged to attend this free event.

Throughout this presentation, the ICAC Educators will be dicussing ways you can protect your children no matter how they access the internet. Kids go online from;

• School computers.

• Friends’ computers.

• Laptops and tablets.

• Cell phones.

• MP3 players like the iPod Touch.

• E-readers like the Nook and Kindle.

• Game consoles like the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

• Handheld gaming devices like the Nintendo 3DS or the PlayStation Vita.

Technology changes all the time, and kids are constantly finding the newest websites, apps and gadgets. It's up to you to teach them the basic rules of Internet safety so they can use all of these responsibly.

HISTORY of the program – The Indiana State Police recognized pro-active training of this type for youth was needed after identifying a lack of educational programs to clearly tell youth ages 8 to 18 about the perils of posting too much information on social media sites that could be used against them in the future.

This presentation will cover examples of cases that happen in Indiana, not just examples from elsewhere. The presentation will cover;

- Online child sexual solicitation & online child extortion, also known as sextortion

- Online production of child pornography

- Online bullying, also known as cyberbullying

- Online radicalization mitigation to reduce the recruitment of youth by terrorists and criminal extremists

Of the 61 ICAC task forces, Indiana is the FIRST to institute this program which provides communities these presentations by specifically trained Youth Educators free of charge. These educators haven’t stopped traveling the four corners of the state making these presentations since last month!

The Indiana State Police continues to promote these events and also is respectful of privacy concerns for those attending.

Also attending the program will be the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Owen County Sheriff’s Department and the Spencer Police Department.
