At approximately 12:30 PM on March 12, 2016, Menlo Park Police Officers conducted an investigative stop after observing a suspicious vehicle with three occupants parked at the Bayfront Park, located at 1600 Marsh Road. During the investigation, officers located stolen items along with mail and personal documents not belonging to the subjects inside. The vehicle also had been reported stolen earlier in the day to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
An investigation into the items located inside the vehicle was conducted. It was determined through this investigation that the items had been stolen from victims throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara County. At this time there has been over 30 possible victims identified. The investigation is currently on going.
The suspect was identified as HERMAN MARK ANTHONY VELEZ, JR (28 years old) a resident of Redwood City. Velez was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail on identify theft charges and possession of a stolen vehicle. The other two occupants were identified and released.
