Traffic Advisory: Pensacola Street Water System Improvement Project

RMY Construction, Inc., the Board of Water Supply’s (BWS) contractor for the water system improvement project on Pensacola Street, will be conducting probing work for existing utility lines on Pensacola Street near the Kapiolani Boulevard intersection beginning March 14. This phase of work will start from Kapiolani Boulevard and will proceed mauka towards South King Street. Motorists are advised to expect the following changes:

• Closure of the two far right lanes of Pensacola Street between South King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard;
• The right turn lane onto Kapiolani Boulevard from Pensacola Street will be modified;
• Street parking will be restricted along certain areas of Pensacola Street between South King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard; and
• As work progresses, a temporary lane will be implemented to allow traffic flow into McKinley High School from Pensacola Street.

The indicated traffic modifications are subject to change based on project needs. Lane closures will occur Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The contractor will replace approximately 2,300 feet of 12-inch water main and 750 feet of 8-inch water main, and appurtenances on Pensacola Street. The existing waterlines were installed at various times, ranging from the 1920s through the 1970s. The renewal of the water system will improve fire protection and water service reliability for residents and businesses in the area. Barring any unforeseen circumstances this project should be completed in the first quarter of 2017.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during construction hours, if possible, and to allow for additional travel time. Drivers that must travel through the work area are asked to please abide by posted traffic signs.
