Car, train crash in Pokagon Twp.
1 killed in crash
Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that 1544 hours on 03/04/2016, the Cass County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate a vehicle/train crash at the Pokagon Hwy crossing in Pokagon Twp. 66 yr old Middlebury resident Barbara Schult was east bound on Pokagon Hwy when according to witnesses she passed stationary vehicles and attempted to cross over the railroad tracks while the gates where down and the visual and audible signals were engaged. Upon seeing this vehicle enter the crossing the engineer, 52 yr old Battle Creek resident, David Morgan, engaged the emergency braking mode to stop the train but was unable to avoid the collision. Mr. Morgan was transported by ambulance to Lakeland hospital in Niles for treatment. Ms. Schult was declared deceased at the scene. At this time, safety belt and alcohol use is unknown.
Assisting were Dowagiac City Police, Pokagon Tribal Police and Michigan State Police. Also assisting were Pokagon Township Fire Department and SMCAS Ambulance service
This case is still under investigation.
