SMPD Community Alert

SMPD notified our community early this afternoon of police activity in the 100 block of South Amphlett Blvd. The suspect in the incident surrendered peacefully to SMPD at just after 2:30pm. There is no further danger in the area due to this incident. The details are below. 

At about 1pm on Saturday afternoon February 13th, SMPD was alerted to an evolving incident at a tow yard in the 100 block of South Amphlett Blvd. Robert Hernandez, a 48 year old former resident of San Francisco, brandished what appeared to be a handgun at an employee on the premises, and threatened to shoot the employee. Hernandez then barricaded himself in a shipping container on the premises. 

SMPD Officers quickly responded, set a perimeter, and established incident command. A crisis-intervention trained negotiating team reached out to Hernandez, and established communication. Meanwhile, tactical officers made preparations, including non-lethal options, to safely take the suspect into custody. After about an hour of negotiation, Hernandez surrendered to officers and was safely taken into custody.

Officers seized an airsoft pistol (indistinguishable at a short distance from an actual firearm) from the area where the suspect was hiding. Hernandez will be booked into San Mateo County Jail on charges related to the brandishing as well as drug charges. The follow-up investigation is ongoing.
