Bomb Threat & Evacuation Update

On Feb. 9, 2016, at 10:23 a.m. Corona Fire and Police Departments in conjunction with Riverside County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team were dispatched to the 800 block of North Main Street in Corona to investigate a bomb threat.

During the response, at approximately 1:55 p.m., the Hazardous Device Team deployed their tactical robot along with the Corona Fire Hazardous Materials Team to investigate the threat. The back window of the van was breached and upon doing so, one adult male was found inside that was unresponsive.

Upon mitigating the threat, Corona Fire Department personnel attempted to provide medical attention to the occupant at which time he was determined to be deceased.

The cause of death is under investigation and will be determined by a coroner’s investigation at a later time. The name of the deceased will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

At approximately 7 p.m. the bomb threat was cleared; no incendiary or explosive devices were located. The Corona Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team located 2.5 gallons of toxic chemicals within the van. The Hazardous Materials Team is trying to determine the make-up of the chemicals and their role in the investigation.

We would like to thank our community for their patience and continual support during this investigation. If you have any further information about this incident, please contact Sergeant Paul Mercado at 951-736-2280.
