Closure of Filmore and Market Streets Due to a Water Main Break.
Acting Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced the closure of Filmore and Market streets due to a water main break.
At approximately 3:45 this morning, Newark police officers and fire fighters responded to the report of a water main break at the intersection of Filmore and Market streets. When they arrived they found due to the break a portion of the road collapsed.
The water department responded and is currently in the process of repairing the break in a 16 inch high pressure main. The water is expected to cause icing in the immediate area as well as traffic problems. Although the repairs are in progress, the work is not expected to be complete until well into tomorrow morning.
Market Street is currently closed between Somme and Fillmore. Eastbound traffic on Market to Somme is being diverted to Ferry Street.
We urge the public who would normally traverse this road to find an alternative route or possibly use mass transit.
Update will be provided when available.
