SUMMARY

A 33-year-old Upland man who opened fire on a sheriff sergeant was arrested Friday night in Riverside during a routine traffic stop.

Ismael Luevano opened fire on a sheriff’s sergeant Thursday night at 12:34 a.m., after the sergeant initiated a traffic stop on the suspect’s car in the unincorporated area of Montclair. The sergeant attempted to pull the suspect vehicle over near the intersection of Phillips Boulevard and Yorba Avenue. When Luevano saw the patrol car with its lights activated, he leaned out of the passenger side window and fired at least once at the sergeant.

The sergeant was not hit or injured nor was his vehicle struck. He gave chase to the suspect vehicle but was unable to make contact. Surveillance footage from the area provided valuable investigative information. Detectives from the Chino Hills station initiated an extensive investigation and identified Luevano, who was also wanted in connection with an attempted murder case out of Montclair. Luevano had an active warrant issued by Montclair Police for the attempted murder that occurred on January 16, 2016.

On Friday, January 29, 2016, at 8:00 p.m., Luevano was contacted by a Riverside Police Officer during an unrelated traffic stop at the intersection of Cochran and La Sierra Avenues. During the stop, the Riverside officer learned of the active arrest warrant for Luevano and took him into custody without incident. Luevano was booked into a Riverside County Detention Center for the outstanding warrant from Montclair.

Sheriff’s detectives will forward the case regarding the attempted murder of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant to the District Attorney’s Office for filing. The driver of the suspect vehicle on the Sheriff’s Department case has not been located. The attempted murder charge stemming from the Montclair incident is a separate case, with a separate filing.

Anyone with information regarding this case or Luevano’s whereabouts between January 28, 0034 hours and January 29 at 2000 hours is asked to contact Det. Popa at the Chino Hills Station. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call WE-Tip at (800)78-CRIME.
