Media & Community: Person in crisis incident on Celeste Drive has been safely resolved.

MEDIA RELEASE / COMMUNITY ALERT

FROM SAN MATEO POLICE DEPARTMENT

The incident involving an armed person in mental health crisis in the 1600 block of Celeste Drive has been safely resolved, and the person in crisis is receiving the care that he needs. This was never an "active shooter" incident.

At about 8:40 am this morning (January 29), Officers responded to the 1600 block of Celeste Drive on a report of a person in crisis.  The reporting party advised SMPD that her husband, a 64 year-old male, had been awake for the last three days, was having paranoid thoughts, and had armed himself with a firearm.

A safety perimeter and tactical plan were immediately put in place. Nearby residents were evacuated or asked to shelter in place as a precaution. Incident command was established, and officers actively worked to establish contact with the subject. A crisis-intervention trained tactical negotiation team was on scene and we were working with mental health professionals to ensure an informed response.

SMPD personnel actively worked to peacefully resolve this situation and we continue to prioritize getting such individuals the assistance that they need.
