On Monday, January 25, 2016, at approximately 4:12 a.m., deputies from the Apple Valley Police Department responded to the report of a home invasion robbery in the 8800 block of Eleventh Avenue in Hesperia. Upon arrival deputies were advised that suspects forced entry into the victim’s home that was occupied by 4 adults and 3 children. The suspect, Stephen Schenck, was armed with a knife and the victim defended himself and his family with a baseball bat. A physical altercation between the suspect and the victim occurred. The suspects fled the location prior to the deputy’s arrival. The victim received lacerations to his back and hands. Stephen Schenck was located near the incident location hiding under a bus. Schenck ignored the deputy’s commands to come out from under the vehicle and show his hands. As deputies were attempting to take the suspect into custody, one deputy initiated a drive stun technique using a taser, another deputy applied fist strikes to get the suspect to comply and surrender his hands to deputies. Schenck was taken into custody. As deputies were walking Mr. Schenck to the patrol car, he became unresponsive. Deputies and emergency medical personnel immediately began CPR. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Stephen Schenck and the victim were former business partners. Schenck was also the victims’ ex-son-in-law. Deputies recovered two knives from underneath the bus.
