Hesperia –Deps respond to domestic disturbance, susp barricaded inside a residence. Deputy involved shooting occurs

LOCATION: 15100 block of Sequoia Avenue, Hesperia

SUSPECTS: Luis Ranero, age 36, a resident of Hesperia
SUMMARY:
On Monday, January 25, 2016, at approximately 12:43 a.m., deputies from the Hesperia Police Department responded to the report of a domestic disturbance in the 15100 block of Sequoia Avenue in Hesperia. The reporting party stated that they had seen a male subject slamming a female’s head into a vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim outside the residence with injuries. The suspect, later identified as Luis Ranero, was inside the residence. The victim advised deputies that Mr. Ranero was a military veteran. Deputies were also advised that Mr. Ranero had several firearms to include a loaded AK47 inside the residence next to the front door. Mr. Ranero was also known to carry a 9mm handgun in his waistband. Deputies began PA announcements asking him to exit the residence and safely surrender with his hands in the air. Mr. Ranero failed to comply with their commands. At approximately 1:11 a.m., Mr. Ranero called Sheriff’s dispatch and stated “There is going to be a shootout if I exit my home.” He also advised dispatch that he had his weapons next to him.
Nearby residences were evacuated as a precaution to ensure the safety of those residents. The Sheriff’s Department Specialized Enforcement Division, SWAT Team, responded to the location.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., Luis Ranero, exited his residence with his back to the deputies. Deputies ordered Mr. Ranero to show them his hands but, he refused to comply with their commands. Mr. Ranero turned toward the deputies with his arm extended, and a deputy involved shooting occurred. Mr. Ranero was transported to a local area hospital and is expected to recover. Mr. Ranero was found to be unarmed.
Deputies recovered eight rifles, a handgun and ammunition from inside the residence.
Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail were requested and responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
