Advisory

Borough of North Caldwell - Message from the Mayor

Dear Resident,

1) I was on a conference call with County Executive Joe DiVincenzo and Sheriff Armando Fontura. The county has provided local weather briefings for Essex County. The blizzard will continue until Sunday morning with 1 to 1 1/2 inches of snow falling per hour. It is expected to accumulate up to 15 inches with wind gusts up to 35 mph.

2) I was on a conference call with Governor Christie this morning and he reiterated that he declared a State of Emergency in New Jersey: Stay off of the roads unless there is an emergency or you are  required for work; do not park on the street so that plows can clear the streets.

3) I have been in contact with  our Fire Chief and Essex County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator John  D'Ascenzio. He stated that, if possible, citizens should clear out fire hydrants and  not run any gasoline powered engines i. e. generators   or snow blowers  in the garage as this could cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

4) I spoke with our North Caldwell PSE&G liaison Everton Scott.  He confirmed that there are no power outages in the northern  part of the state. If you do have a power outage or see a down  power line first report it to  PSE&G 1-800-436-7734. Then call the North Caldwell Police Department 973-226-0800. We will coordinate this with the Office of Emergency Management and will take any measures necessary. Mr. Scott stated that the snow by itself does not cause power outages. Extreme wind gusts are the problem. At this point the winds do not seem to be causing an issue; any downed power line should be considered "live ". Do not touch or drive over it.

5) We have 7 plows on the roads and they have been operating since the early morning hours. They are continually plowing to keep up with the constant snowfall and when the snow finally  ends they will clear the streets.
6) When the snow does stop on Sunday please be very careful removing it. Anyone who is not used to exercising should not do the shoveling. When clearing out snow push and do not lift it, keep hydrated and be careful of slipping. Also check in on any elderly neighbors.

Keep warm and safe. This is a good time to catch up on your reading.

Mayor Joe Alessi
