Advisory

safety tips for before the storm

This storm will bring heavy and wet snow combined with significant wind. It's the type of storm that potentially impacts tree limbs and power wires. Be prepared with the following:

- remember to purchase fuel for your snowblower and/or generator

- before the snow begins or accumulates, remove doormats, newspapers, or anything on the ground that might damage or clog your snowblower

- never attempt to unclog a snowblower with your hands. Find an old broom handle or similar object today. If you have something ready to use, you will be less inclined to use your hands if a clog occurs

- never touch a downed wire of any kind

- Protect yourself from carbon-monoxide poisoning by starting and running a gas-powered snow blower or generator outside - never in a garage, shed, or other enclosed area - even if the door is open!

- Remember, heavy exertion and cold temperatures can be a dangerous combination. Take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion. Seniors and people with hypertension, heart disease, or diabetes should consult a doctor before attempting any physical exertion that is not typical to their daily routine.
