Weather forecasters are predicting substantial wet snow for this weekend. This may cause extended power outages

Weather forecasters are predicting substantial wet snow with high winds for this weekend. This combination can cause downed power lines and potentially extended power outages.

Many of us have either had generators installed or purchased portable generators to get past these times without power.

Even though the generators can provide some of the creature comforts we are used to, they also produce deadly Carbon Monoxide gas. Improperly installed or run generators can cause this colorless, odorless gas to get into the living quarters of our homes, often with fatal results.

When running a generator never have it located within your home, including the garage. Keep the generator away from windows and doors. Any of these locations can allow the gas to enter your home. If you can smell exhaust fumes there is also carbon monoxide that you cannot smell that can kill you.

Never try to power the house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet, a practice known as “back feeding.” This is an extremely dangerous practice that presents an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors served by the same utility transformer. It also bypasses some of the built-in household protection devices.

Stay warm and dry, but stay safe. Keep generators outside away from the house.

If your power goes out notify JCP&L. Each call is how they track the extent of an outage. You are not only helping yourself but also your neighbors by making this call.
