20 Year Old Fort Wayne Man Arrested for Having Handgun on School Property

(New Haven, IN)-A 20 year old Fort Wayne man turned himself in today after a warrant was issued for him for allegedly taking a handgun onto the property of the East Allen Alternative School earlier in the school year.

An investigation into the incident by Detective Clint Hetrick revealed that on Friday, October 9, 2015 Kevin Charles Vandersloot arrived early in the afternoon on his motorcycle and carried a backpack onto school premises.  Vandersloot was observed by a faculty member a short time later in the school’s parking lot taking a handgun out of that same backpack and placing it on his hip prior to leaving the premises on the motorcycle.  Video surveillance of the parking lot confirmed the allegation.

Hetrick credits the vigilance and quick reporting by the school’s faculty member in bringing this situation to the attention of school officials, who immediately reported it to Hetrick.  “We continue to urge the public at large to report anything that is suspicious or illegal.  If you see something, say something”, said Hetrick.  The East Allen County School (EACS) Corporation and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office assisted with the investigation.

Dr. Ken Folks, EACS Superintendent of Schools said, “The safety of our students and staff is extremely important.  We have empowered our staff to take action to keep our students and staff safe”.

Vandersloot was incarcerated in the Allen County Jail and has since posted a $2,500.00 bond.  He is being charged with the following:

  • Possession of a firearm on school property, Level 6 Felony

All Suspects Are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty in a Court of Law
