Sewer Main Back in Service

During the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 13th, the Mount Laurel MUA experienced a leak on its 24” sanitary sewer force main, just south of Route 38. Crews worked continuously for almost 24 hours to repair the pipe. The system was returned to full regular operation at 3am on Thursday, January 14th. MUA sewer customers may resume normal use of the sewer system.

Sewage from which normally flows thru the leaking pipe (about 3 million gallons per day) was continuously hauled by over a dozen trucks until the repair was completed. Despite this effort, a spill occurred in the Ramblewood section of town; exact quantity is unknown at this time. Spill location will be mitigated by MUA crews during daylight hours.

To help facilitate the repair, MUA sewer customers were asked to limit their water use to essential use only until the repair was completed. The purpose of limiting water use was to reduce the amount of wastewater that was generated and thereby discharged to the sanitary sewer system, reducing the quantity being hauled or released to the environment. The Mount Laurel Municipal Utilities Authority would like to extend thanks its customers who cooperated by reducing their water use.

Work at the Hartford Road leak location (200 block of Hartford Road), including road restoration will resume later today. Hartford Road remains open to vehicular traffic in both directions.
