One Airlifted From Fayette County Crash

Connersville – A crash this morning on SR 44 west of Connersville, involving a semi and a pickup, sent a Fayette County man to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis with internal injuries. The crash had SR44 blocked for over three hours as crews worked to free the man and clear the wreckage.

Around 7:15 a.m. this morning the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a possible head on collision in front of the residence at 2363 W. SR 44. Indiana State Police Sergeant Brian Metcalfe arrived a short time later to find a black 2002 Chevrolet Pickup in the ditch on the south side of the roadway, and a 2012 International Tractor-Trailer across both lanes of SR44.

The preliminary investigation by Sergeant Metcalfe indicates the Chevrolet Truck, driven by Greg Pflum, age 39 of Connersville, was west bound on SR 44 when Pflum lost control of the vehicle on an icy section of roadway.  The truck rotated around into the east bound lane where it was hit in the passenger side bed by the east bound semi.

The driver of the semi, Chauncey Nichols, age 37 of Louisville, Ky, was uninjured in the crash.  Mr. Pflum had to be extricated from his vehicle and was flown by medical helicopter to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis with internal injuries.

At the time of the crash investigators believe that Pflum, a volunteer firefighter with the Bentonville Fire Department, was in route to the Glenwood Fire Department to assist with a fire in the Glenwood area that involved entrapment.

Sergeant Metcalfe was assisted at the scene by Troopers Harrison and Ooley; Motor Carrier Inspectors Bunzendahl and Alexander; the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, Fayette County EMS and the Glenwood Fire Department.
