Another Round of Snow kept Emergency Crews Busy Today

Indianapolis- Troopers from the Indianapolis District spent another day responding to numerous weather related calls. A combination of frigid temperatures and blowing snow created very dangerous travel conditions during the morning rush hour and throughout most of the day. As of 4:00 p.m. the Indiana State Police Indianapolis District had responded to more than 100 calls for service since midnight. Most of those calls were a result of the road conditions. There were 75 crashes reported, 10 of those resulted in injury. Fortunately, none of the injuries were reported as life-threatening. Aside from crashes, Troopers responded to more than 16 slide offs and 17 disabled vehicles.

At certain times throughout the day crashes caused temporary closures of the interstate and major highways. Keeping the roadway clear is one priority for police and other responders. If you find yourself stuck in a back-up as a result of one of these closures, you should know police and emergency responders are working diligently to get the roadway re-opened. Please be patient, you should never attempt to drive the wrong to get out of the traffic jam, nor should you ever attempt a U-turn on the interstate. Not only is it illegal, it is very dangerous.

When traveling in winter weather be sure to allow extra following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. Be sure all the snow is cleared off of your windows and mirrors. Turn on your headlights and most importantly reduce your speed.  If you are involved in a minor crash, remove your vehicle from the roadway or to the next exit. If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road, the safest place is inside your vehicle. Be sure your phone is charged and equip your vehicle with emergency supplies.

Do not call police dispatch to inquire about road conditions. Telephone lines need to remain available for 911 and calls for assistance.
