Advisory

Be aware during the upcoming cold months of home visit scams by people posing as Utility Workers or other.

Over the last several years, law enforcement occasionally receives reports of elderly homeowners who are visited by individuals who state they are with a local utility company and wish to enter the residence due to an issue associated with the cold weather.  Unsuspecting residents allow entry and it is found later that items are missing from the house after the perpetrators have left.  This is a scam usually involving two persons posing as utility workers.  The perpetrators separate while in the residence; one in contact with the homeowner, while the other searches for valuables.

The Sheboygan Police Department was advised that the following event recently occurred in the Fox Valley and Manitowoc area.  There have been no reports in Sheboygan.

The Sheboygan Police Department asks that residents be aware of such occurrences and not hesitate to ask for identification prior to allowing someone to enter their residence.  In addition, requesting the business phone number of the workers present is not unwarranted along with confirming their presence at your residence.  Legitimate people will easily be validated.
