Evening Crash Causes Semi to Overturn, Trapping Driver

Ripley County-Yesterday evening, at approximately 8:00 PM, the Indiana State Police investigated a crash involving a 2014 International semi-tractor hauling a trailer that overturned on US 421 near Hopewell Road, approximately a half mile north of US 50 near Versailles.

Initial investigation by Trooper Nicholas Albrecht determined that the vehicle being driven by James Gardner Jr., age 60, Akron, OH was traveling northbound on US 421 near Hopewell Road when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle ran off the east side of the roadway.  The vehicle then entered a ditch before rolling onto its side.  When the vehicle overturned, the trailer lost the load being hauled causing two large metal coils to be spilled.  The driver of the vehicle was briefly trapped in the vehicle before being freed, uninjured.

Traffic in the area was slowed during the cleanup which took approximately six hours.  Trooper Albrecht was assisted at the scene by the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, Osgood Police Department, Versailles Fire Department, Ripley County EMS, and Affordable Todd’s Wrecker Service.
