Information on open carry handgun legislation becoming effective January 1, 2016.

                      Open/Concealed Handgun Carry Legislation

During the most recent legislative session, the Texas State Legislature passed law that expands the existing law governing the carrying of concealed handguns by Concealed Handgun License holders, to now include the open carrying of handguns by licensed citizens. The simple way to explain the updated law is that it authorizes licensed citizens to openly carry a handgun in the same places that currently allow the licensed carrying of a concealed handgun. Those that currently have a license to carry a concealed handgun will not be required to obtain a separate license for open carry. Those seeking a handgun carry license after January 1, 2016 will be required to complete the updated curriculum.

Private businesses may elect to prohibit the carrying of concealed handguns, open carry handguns, or both within their premises but must advise handgun carrying patrons either verbally, thru a written advisory or via posted signage that either open or concealed carrying of a handgun, or both are prohibited.

The Sachse Police Department is concerned with the rights, wellbeing and safety of our citizens. Information about the new law is being published as an opportunity to inform our citizens, and reduce alarm or misconceptions as a result of these legislative changes.

The Sachse Police Department will continue to respond to all calls from citizens concerned about someone being in possession of a handgun. Officers will conduct an appropriate investigation and take the proper course of action dependent upon the circumstances encountered. As always, if a citizen is concerned or alarmed about a situation, they are encouraged call 911 immediately.
