Burglar Wanted Cigarettes to Smoke

MONROE – December 20, 2015: At 1:43 am, Monroe police fficers responded to an alarm at the Shell Gas Station in the 19300 block of SR 2, Monroe. The first responding officer found a smashed window and additional officers and a tracking K-9 were called to the scene. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.

Video surveillance was obtained that shows a rock coming through the window at approximately 1:12 am and about 20 minutes later the suspect is seen removing the broken glass on the bottom of the window before he crawls in. He is then observed behind the business counter filling a plastic bag with cigarettes and cigars.

Monroe police officers recognized the suspect from previous contacts to include a burglary arrest in 2011. Of note was the limp observed in the video that the suspect is known to have. Officers went to the last known address in Monroe and found that he had recently moved. Tenants at the apartments said they had observed him yelling on Main Street, not far from the gas station, around 10 pm last night.

At 10:30 am officers observed the suspect walking on Main Street, contacted him and placed him in custody. The clothing he was wearing was consistent with those observed in the surveillance video, a blue jacket, black jeans and tennis shoes. During the interview, the suspect initially denied being involved in the burglary, but later admitted that is was him and that he did it. He said he “was drunk, and was stupid” and admitted he wanted the cigarettes to smoke. He told the detective where he had stashed the cigarettes. An officer went to the area and located a dark sweatshirt and pair of work gloves similar to the ones observed in the video as well as the cigarettes.
