The Newark Police Department is releasing information about recent crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

December 7, 2015

0603Hours: Officer Musantry was dispatched to a residence in the 36500 block of Charles St. to investigate an auto burglary. The victim reported that unknown suspects forced their way into her locked van and stole cleaning equipment. A neighbor’s surveillance video shows that around 0234hours, 3 suspects in hooded sweatshirts driving a Dodge or Jeep SUV pried the doors open and took the property.

1441Hours: A victim came to Newark PD to report a burglary to their storage unit from the Public Storage located at 35360 Fircrest Street. The locker was burglarized overnight on December 6, 2015. Tools and HAM radio equipment were stolen.

1740 Hours: Officers were dispatched to an auto vs. pedestrian collision on Cedar Blvd. at San Antonio Way. The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian darted from the sidewalk and into the path of a northbound vehicle in the #1 lane of Cedar Blvd. The pedestrian received significant injuries and was transported to a local trauma center. Traffic Officer Allum is investigating the collision.

1832 Hours: Officer Arroyo issued a citation to 31 year old male of Newark for vandalism after he broke a window by pounding on it with his cell phone at the residence of his ex-wife.

1937 Hours: Officer Khairy investigated a package stolen from a porch that occurred between Saturday and Sunday.

On 12-07-2015 at 8:21 PM, the Newark Police Communications Center received a call requesting a welfare check on the inhabitants at an address in the 5600 block of McLaughlin Avenue in Newark. The caller reported he was asked by a family friend living in Korea to check on the occupants at the house. The reporting party went to the residence and saw a small child inside the home and the kitchen in disarray.
Newark Police Officers responded to the home and discovered an unresponsive female inside the house. Alameda County Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene and determined the female was dead. The victim has been identified as Eunkyoung Han, a 38 year old female.
An infant and a young child were located inside the residence along with Hee Jin Kim, a 39 year old male, the husband of the victim and the father of the children. There was blood and broken items strewn about the interior of the house indicating a struggle inside the residence.
Hee Jin Kim did not cooperate with Officers and did not to provide details of what may have occurred inside the residence. The children were examined at a local hospital as a precaution and then taken into protective custody. Both the suspect and victim are Korean citizens. The Newark Police Department worked with the Korean Consulate to notify the victim’s family of this tragic event.

Kim was subsequently arrested and booked for 187PC- homicide.


December 8, 2015

2007 Hours: A resident on the 8500 block of Mahogany Pl. returned home to an open front door and heard the sound of breaking glass. Officer responded to a possible burglary in-progress. Officer Mavrakis had his K-9 search, but the suspects were not located. It turned out the breaking glass was from the rear sliding door. The residence had been ransacked sometime between 1900 and time of call.

2127 Hours: Officers responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 6200 block of Radcliffe Ave. Officer Slater arrested a 38 year old male of Newark for 243(e)(1) PC – domestic violence. He was booked at the Fremont Jail.

December 9, 2015

1114 Hours: NPD Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6600 block of Dairy Ave, for a battery in progress. Dispatch received calls that a male subject associated with the address was assaulting a woman. Officer Jackman arrived and determined a 19 year old male of Newark had battered his girlfriend and fled as police arrived. A perimeter was established, a K-9 track was conducted, but the male was not located.

1823 Hours: Officer Taylor investigated an armed robbery that had occurred at 6:00PM at the Classic Cleaners on Jarvis Ave. The suspect was described as a black male, 20-25 year old, 5-07 tall, wearing a black hoodie and dark colored jeans and armed with a handgun. The victim was not injured and the suspect fled the area.

December 10, 2015

0856 Hours: Detective Ramos conducted a probation search at a residence in the 6700 block of Albyn Ct, and arrested a 37 year old male of Newark for possessing drug paraphernalia (H&S 11364), a 32 year old female of Newark for possessing a controlled substance (H&S 11377), and a 37 year old male of Newark for an outstanding arrest warrant. The male who was possessing drug paraphernalia was issued a citation and was released, the other two suspects were transported to Santa Rita Jail and booked.

1528 Hours: Officer Jackman was dispatched to the Burlington Coat Factory, located at the New Park Mall, for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Officer Jackman accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 49 year old male of Oakland for petty theft (PC 484). He was issued a notice to appear in court and was released.

2108 Hours: Officer Allum attempted to initiate a pedestrian stop on a shoplifting suspect from the Sears store. The suspect, a 27 year old male of Oakland, immediately fled. Officer Allum proceeded to chase the suspect on foot for literally a mile before he was tackled and taken into custody with the assistance of additional responding units. The male was booked at Fremont PD Jail for 148(a)(1)PC – resisting arrest and 496(a)PC – possession of stolen property.

2314 Hours: Fremont PD was following up on an armed robbery in their city which led them to the suspect’s location on Portsmouth Avenue in Newark. Due to the violent nature of the crime, a SWAT/HNT response was utilized. Three suspects were taken into custody and the property taken during the robbery was recovered. A separate Nixle will be released documenting this investigation.

0153 Hours: As units were clearing the above SWAT/HNT incident, two members of the Hostage Negotiations Team/NPD Police Officers were driving a police van back to the Newark PD on Newark Blvd. near Brittany Ave. when the passenger door window shattered and one of the officers was struck in the forehead by what was later determined to be a large rock. The officer was bleeding profusely and they initially thought they were being shot at prompting an 11-99 broadcast (emergency mutual aid request to neighboring police departments). The officer was taken to a local trauma center where he was treated for a large laceration to his forehead. Responding police officers flooded the area and located three juveniles. The juveniles admitted to throwing the rock at the police vehicle and were sorry they had injured a police officer. The juveniles were arrested for 245(c)PC – assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer causing injury and released to their parents pending a court hearing.

December 11, 2015

0758 Hours: Officer Ackerman contacted and arrested a 22 year old male of Fremont for public intoxication (647(f) PC). He was transported and booked into Santa Rita Jail.

December 12, 2015

1827 Hours: Officer Johnson investigated a theft case at NewPark Mall where suspect, who is on probation for theft offenses, stole two skateboards from Zumiez and additional merchandise from Macy’s. Macy’s loss prevention staff detained a 29 year old male of Fremont. When Officer Johnson was placing the suspect in a patrol vehicle, he spat in the face of a NewPark Mall Security guard. The male was booked at Santa Rita Jail for 484(a) PC – petty theft, 496 PC- possession of stolen property, 242 PC- battery and 1203.2 PC- probation violation.

0118 Hours: While officers were conducting a security check of the O’Sullivan’s bar parking lot 5660 Thornton Avenue at closing time, an extremely intoxicated 20 year old male of Chico was contacted and was unable to care for himself and was placed under arrest. He immediately became combative and ultimately had to be placed in full body restraints with a spit hood. The male kicked and screamed at officers and spit into an officer’s mouth prior to the spit hood being Corning, continually approached officers after being ordered to stay away. The male from Corning, who was also extremely intoxicated, refused to obey orders, pulled away and resisted, while being told he was being placed under arrest. They were both booked at Santa Rita Jail. An officer suffered a broken finger during the struggle with the males.

December 13, 2015

1052 Hours: Officers responded to a residence in the 6600 block of Baine Avenue for a burglary alarm call. Officer Mapes arrived and found the rear slider had been shattered. Fremont PD assisted with a K9 and a search of the residence was conducted. It appears a family dog who was inside and the home alarm scared the suspects away.

1338 Hours: Officer Katz arrested a 60 year old male of Newark for 21310 PC - carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. The male was contacted near 39986 Cedar Blvd (Togo’s) where a probation search was conducted. Robert was issued a citation and released.

1427 Hours: Officer’s Katz, Musantry, and Mapes conducted a probation search at a residence in the 6200 block of Bennington Dr. During the search a 32 year old female, a 35 year old male, and a 34 year old male all of Newark were arrested for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. All three people were arrested and released on citations

1610 Hours: Officer Mapes contacted several people behind to the rear of the business located at 35232 Newark Blvd (Taqueria Los Gallos). During the contact Officer Mapes arrested a 22 year old female of Newark for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. She was arrested and released on a citation.

1646 Hours: Officer Mapes contacted a 30 year old male of Newark sitting in his vehicle parked near the “Park and Ride” on Ardenwood Blvd near Hwy 84 in Fremont. Officer Mapes arrested the male for a no cite warrant and booked him at Fremont Jail.

1745 Hours: Officer Arroyo accepted two shoplifters in custody from JC Penney’s at NewPark Mall. A 32 year old female of Hayward and a 28 year old female of Hayward were both cite released from the store for 484 PC - shoplifting.

1845 Hours: Officer Losier investigated a hit and run collision that occurred in front of Game Stop located at 5885 Jarvis Ave that had just occurred. Occupants of the victim vehicle complained of pain from the minor damage collision. The responsible vehicle was described as a black colored four door car. The suspect vehicle was last seen westbound on Hwy-84.
